My child matters

my child matters | sanofi espoir foundation

Seven black & white portraits and 8 triptychs of children affected by cancer

The Sanofi Espoir Foundation asked me to photograph some of the work that they do helping to improve the treatment of cancer in the developing world. 300,000 children around the world diagnosed with cancer every year. What happens to these children largely depends on where they live: those in high-income countries have an 80% chance of being cured, but for those in low or middle countries — where around 250,000 of these children live – survival rates are around 20%. In the poorest countries, they can fall to just 10%.

As I met children I realised there was a huge impact on the family. I decided to make two types of photographs; large black and white photographs of the children with their parents or grandparents, and tryptic’s to tell the stories, and show the faces that lie behind the word “cancer.”
