Benetton asked me to travel to Senegal to meet the musician Youssou N’Dour, and create a campaign about his new scheme Birima- a microcredit bank giving loans to poor people to help them work their way out of poverty. I was in a difficult position as Birima was still an idea and had no existing clients. I decided to represent the essence of what microcredit is about: work. I hired a removal lorry and travelled 2000km around Senegal photographing people we met.
