Akodessewa fetish market, Lomé, Togo, is said to be Africa’s biggest voodoo market. The objects both fascinated and disturbed me; piles of dried chameleons, lions skulls, gorillas feet, hippos teeth, and dog heads painted to look like leopards. I made still-lives; grisly epitaphs for Africa’s indigenous fauna. The dog heads precariously balancing on fetish skulls anticipates a future in which road-kill dogs, cats, sheep and desiccated chickens will be all that can be on offer because the rest were all consumed or deprived of their natural habitat.
